How to play road trip bingo

  1. Hand out the cards — the same card for everyone makes it a race; different cards keep it fair between ages.
  2. Spot it, call it, mark it. A thing counts when the player names it out loud while it's still in view.
  3. Five in a row wins — across, down or diagonally. The center square is free.
  4. Play blackout for long stretches: the first to mark every square wins. On an interstate, expect 30 to 60 minutes.

Which card for which age

CardAgesBest on
🚗 Little Kids Bingo (9 pictures)3–5Any road — big, easy things to spot
🛣️ Highway Bingo5+Interstates and long drives
🏙️ Town Bingo5+Cities, small towns, the last miles before arrival
🚦 Road Sign Bingo7+Any road — doubles as reading practice

Switching cards with the scenery keeps the game fresh: Highway Bingo dries up in a city, and Town Bingo is useless on an empty interstate. When the road gets long and the bingo runs out, move on to the license plate game with our free 50-state checklist — it lasts the whole trip.

Tips to make the cards last

  • Sheet protectors and a dry-erase marker turn each card into a reusable board for the whole trip.
  • A clipboard per child keeps the card flat on a lap and stops it sliding under the seat.
  • Small prizes for a bingo — picking the next song, choosing the snack at the rest stop — work better than candy on a long drive.
  • No reading yet? Little Kids Bingo uses pictures only; an adult can read the other cards aloud.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you play road trip bingo?

Each player gets a bingo card with things you can see from the car — trucks, animals, road signs. When you spot one, mark it. The first to complete a full row, column or diagonal calls out "Bingo!" and wins the round. For a longer game, play blackout: the first to mark every square wins.

What age is car bingo for?

Picture bingo with 9 squares works from about age 3, as soon as a child can recognize a cow or a bus. The 25-square cards suit ages 5 and up, and road sign bingo is a good fit from 7, when kids start reading signs on their own.

How do you reuse bingo cards on a road trip?

Slip each card into a clear sheet protector or laminate it, and mark squares with a dry-erase marker. Wipe it clean at the next rest stop and start a new round.

What's the difference between road trip bingo and the license plate game?

Bingo is about spotting things — vehicles, animals, signs — and a round lasts 20 to 40 minutes. The license plate game is about collecting states, and it can run across a whole trip or even a whole year. They pair well: bingo for the first hour, the plate game for the long stretch.
